Masanga Marimba

Masanga Marimba is a high-energy, Southern California-based musical ensemble that fuses traditional African, Latin, and Caribbean traditions. Formed in 2000, the group’s sound is built around seven Zimbabwean marimbas, complemented by drums, percussion, horns, and vocals. The word "Masanga" originates from an African term meaning the coming together of rivers or roads, symbolizing the blending of diverse global sounds.

The band’s vast repertoire ranges from authentic African and Latin classics to upbeat, family-friendly covers. The ensemble is led by Dr. Ric Alviso, a professor of world music and ethnomusicologist at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) and Santa Monica College (SMC). Professor Alviso honed his craft studying traditional music in Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Ghana. Masanga Marimba has shared the stage with major acts like Neil Young, John Mayer, Norah Jones, and Beck. They have also performed at high-profile venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, the Skirball Cultural Center, and the Getty Center.
